The Sunshine Coast Women’s Apex Club
In August of 1999 a public meeting was held to find interest in forming a Women’s Apex Club on the Sunshine Coast. Early in 2000 we began to hold meetings with 7 members. As Nambour Apex Club agreed to sponsor us, we acted under their umbrella until our own Charter on the 29th July 2001.
In the past few years, our numbers have not increased considerably, we have recruited new members, but we have also lost members due to relocation and family commitments. The Sunshine Coast is a heavily populated area, but because it is mainly tourist orientated, we seem to have difficulty in finding those that fill the Apex criteria.
We have been very busy fundraising for local and National charities. Donations have been made to organisations such as, a local family centre, the Salvation Army, Red Cross, Leukaemia Foundation, a local institution that cares for disabled people, a charity golf day and many others. Money raised has also been used to contribute to improvements at Apex Camp Mudjimba. Improvements have included installing ceiling fans, hanging curtains and painting along with various working bees/general clean ups. We also sponsor a child through the Smith Family.
After attempting several fundraising events such as, a garage sale, sausage sizzles at Big W, an auction, chocolate and biscuit drives, we are now concentrating on other ways to make money for the local community. Our recent fundraisers have been BBQ’s at Bunnings.
On a club level, our club has been very successful in the short time that we have been active within the community. We have had winners of the District Apexian of the Year Award and recently one of our members became the first female District Governor of the Sunshine Coast. Another of our members, Vicki won the State Public Speaking finals and went on to do exceptionally well at the 2004 national finals in Hobart.
We maintain a healthy balance between social and service work. Some of our many social outings include mock gambling nights, progressive dinner, attending state dinners and conventions, weekends away, fun challenge nights with the local Apex clubs and social meetings.
